Keeping Cool with Kids
Whew! It is HOT out there! Here are a few ideas to help you keep cool with your babies and kids!
- squirt guns! Outline the rules before you get them out, though. No strong streams in faces, respect the other person's wishes, etc.
- just drag out the hose. It's amazing how busy and happy this can keep a kid. And your garden can benefit.
- popsicles! Juice, yogurt, juice AND yogurt, herb tea, fruit and tea, the possibilities are unlimited.
- frozen grapes. In our house I once called them monkey eyeballs and now that's how they're known. You can find something else fun, yet less gross, to call them!
- lie on the floor. I grew up overseas in a tropical climate. When the electricity would go out and take our beloved ceiling fans from us, we would lie on the cool floor. Obviously, the effectiveness of this will depend on your floor. Carpet won't work!
- sit in the baby pool. Get your money's worth out of that birthing pool. Get a book and have story time or turn on an audio book or music and just lounge (if possible. Toddlers don't understand the concept of lounging).
- visit your library. It's air conditioned, full of wonderful books and someone else might already be there waiting to read to your child. In addition to storytimes, our libraries also have art classes and performers.
- Escape to the mountains. In a short amount of time, you can be on top of a mountain, enjoying lower temperatures, wonderful views and a connection to nature.
- These have costs involved, but we also have a spray ground in town, ice cream shops (and gelatto for those with fancier tastes), an indoor miniature golf course, dollar movies and, of course, pools!
We bid you a cool and fun August with your family ...........................Amylee and Amity |
Next 2009 Parenting Series Classes:
PRAISE AND SELF ESTEEM
Thursday, August 13, 6-8pm
Many child development specialists are exploring the backlash of evaluative praise and its effects on a child’s self esteem. In this workshop we’ll explore the root of positive self esteem in children and the use of descriptive praise to support it. Many parents consider a positive self esteem an important goal of parenting. We’ll explore some ways to help children see themselves as valuable from the inside out. This workshop is designed for parents of children of all ages.
See website for pricing and other details. We truly appreciate preregistrations, as there is a minimum attendance requirement to hold this class. |
